Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law play the famous Holmes and Watson in this revamping of the classic detective Sherlock Holmes. This revamped amount is a powerful action thriller that was one of the best entertaining thrillers of 2009. Guy Ritchie takes the classic tales of Sherlock Holmes and with his brilliant casting and vision recreates Sherlock Holmes with a darker adaptation. Downey and Law have a great chemistry together that shows as they argue like an old married couple while knowing at the same time that they would be lost without one another.
Downey brings quick wit and a certain scruffyness to an character that has always been seen as dry and stuffy. While on the opposite end Law plays the role of Dr. watson with a certain charm that allows him to throw out the one liners with such ease. They work off each other so well that this was definitely the top bro-mance duo of the year, as they argued with each other like an old married couple but they both give the feeling of knowing that they would be completely lost without the other.
Guy Ritchie's directing style clearly comes through, from the dark, grimy Victorian London production values to the violent boxing and martial arts matches. Holmes ability to use deductive reasoning with the steps he takes to neutralize a suspect or interpret clues allows Ritchie to show his ability to create very stylized flashbacks.
Sherlock Holmes is a great movie and was one of the best films that I saw in 2009. Downey Jr. seems to have hit his stride as he is becoming similar to Johnny Depp in that everything he touches turns to gold. He has been able to set himself up with two successful movie characters that have set him up for multiple sequels with both of these characters. I am giving it four buckets of popcorn out of five buckets.
