Run Fatboy Run

Run Fatboy Run was very enjoyable to watch. It stars Simon Pegg as Dennis Doyle, a man who five years previous left his pregnant fiance at the altar, decides to run a marathon to win her back despite the fact that he is completely out of shape to do so. This marks the directorial debut for David Schwimmer in a feature film. This movie ended up being completely different then what was initially expected, this ended up being a movie that was more serious then I expectedd but was definitely still a comedy. While this movie was nothing it had great comedic value.

Simon Pegg delivers the comedic moments superbly, but anyone that has seen one of his past movies is not surprising at all. However Pegg is able to bring a touch of warmth to the role with the great scenes with his son in the movie. Pegg continues to use his successful formula that has served him so well in the past: playing the nerd who eventually becomes the hero. Members of the audience go through a full range of emotions while watching from feeling sorry for him to being repelled by him. He is the hopeless case that everyone just wants to see succeed or that we desire to "fix".

While this movie was not as zany as expected it ended up being a lot funnier then expected. I believe part of the reason for this not as zany as expected movie was the attempt to make it be more mainstream then previous movies Simon Pegg has starred in. While it may have been predictable and the plot was far from original, the humor was spot on. David Schwimmer in his directorial debut did a great job to capture the small british town feel without coming across as hokey or even soap opera like.

While this movie never won any awards and more then likely was not heralded by critics. The movie served the purpose for me as to why I watch movies and that is to be entertained and be able to avoid all the troubles that the present day world weighs us all down with. I am giving this movie three buckets of popcorn. While it does have its moments of semi inappropriate comedic bits, I would definitely recommend renting this movie if you are in the mood for a great laugh.
